Although not all breeds of dog need to be clipped or hand-stripped regularly, all dogs need to be groomed in order to keep their coat glossy and healthy. Bathing a dog helps remove foreign matter from the coat, preventing it from irritating the skin. Brushing promotes the production of the oils that protect the coat and keeps the skin healthy and also removes dead hair that, if left in the coat, can be itchy and irritating to the dog. Short haired dogs benefit from professional grooming as much as long haired dogs.
How old should my puppy be when it has it's first professional groom?
Ideally, your puppy should be between 12 and 15 weeks old when he /she is brought for the first groom, with two follow up visits 4 weeks apart. Please refer to the separate "puppy programme" section.
Yes, you are welcome to stay with your pet whilst he/she is being groomed, however, the grooming process can take anything from between 2 and 4 hours (dependant upon breed) and you should allow for this. Owners are not encouraged to stay when their puppies are being groomed as part of the above mentioned puppy programme. Owners may be requested to stay for difficult or oversized dogs.
As a general rule no, although if a pet dislikes for example, having his/her feet trimmed or nails clipped and is liable to bite, we may use a soft nylon muzzle for a short period of time until this part of the grooming process is complete.
